According to folk mythology, Csallóköz was often referred to as the Golden Garden, as it was inhabited by golden-haired fairies. Their most famous queen was the beautiful fairy Ilona. The local fairies were kind-hearted, helpful, and cheerful beings. They assisted fishermen and shepherds. According to folk beliefs, it was thanks to the fairies that gold ended up in the Danube: when they combed their hair, they would throw golden hair and the gold dust caught in the comb into the river. People often heard the fairies’ songs coming from the reeds. Fairy Ilona would often swim on the surface of the Danube as a swan. However, once a young man waited for the fairy while she was bathing. He stole her clothes, and in revenge, she left the Golden Garden with the other fairies. Her younger cousin, Rózsika, however, remained among us in the form of a fairy rose.
